Cocos L. [Palmae-Arecoideae-Cocoeae-Butiinae] 1 C Mal. or Barrier Reef, widely cult. and natur.pantrop.
: from the Portugese coco, coconut. The word originally means, mask, false face, and would be applied to the coconut because it renders (with a lot of fantasy) a mask by the three rounded impressions (germination pores) at one of the ends. Other consider the portugese coco to be derived from Gr. kouki, coconut palm, coconut, or from the Greek koix (koikos), the name of an egyptian palm which leaves were used for plaiting.
